The end of summer
It is definitely harvest season. After making tons of raspberry jam, it was time to can peaches. this year I helped my friend Jen to cann her peaches and we had a nice Friday evening in Bellingham with a production line, that involved Marlene as well. Since then, I have canned tomato sauce (my first year) and the pears from my pear tree. It was thankfully a rather small harvest this year. The tree is old and we don't know, how much longer it will live. I am still waiting for my apples and the quince, so there is a little break right now. Today we dug up our first potatoes. The kids loved it; it was like digging for treasure.
What else have we done? We went for the first time to the Lynden Fair. It is a little smaller than the one in Monroe, and has a more local flavor to it. We loved the Draughthorse display and the chariot races. We tried to get as much beach time in as possible and spent a lot of time with friends. Jay and the girls saw Papa and Grans for a few hours on Sunday, when they picked them up at the airport and dropped them for for their Alaska Cruise. I had a yard sale with friends which was not made easier by the fact that it was pouring rain.
Amelia started school last Wednesday at Shoreline and Marlene will start next Wednesday. Summer is definitely over. The weather has turned to Fall and we love to wear our sweaters. I had no urge yet to turn the heater on, but I am already wearing socks in bed.
